Sometimes you need the one you know by heart
Reading can be the bridge back
He came home yesterday.
Aidyn was gone for the holidays—and when he walked back in, he was full. Full of stories, full of love for his dad’s family, full of the life he has there too.
I didn’t want him to compress himself to fit back into our rhythm. I wanted him to know there was space for all of it.
So we picked up Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid by Jeff Kinney—a book we’ve listened to a million times. One we both know by heart.
I read a couple of chapters. He fell asleep to the audio version.
The book did what it always does: gave us a place to land together. No performance. No “how was your trip?” questions he wasn’t ready to answer. Just the familiar rhythm of stories and Rowley’s hilarious journal, pulling us back into each other.
This is what reading does when we let it. It meets us where we are. It carries what we can’t say yet. It holds the space until we’re ready.
If your kid’s been different lately… after a trip, after a hard season, after anything—this might be the week to reach for an old favorite instead of something new.
Not to teach. Not to fix. Just to say: I’m here. We’re still us.
Reply and tell me: what’s your family’s comfort book? The one you return to when you need to find each other again?
